Statement:

While my work of the last forty years was primarily based on emotion and a love of painting, currently it is firmly rooted in the here and now, that which is in front of me – my neighborhood, the subway, what’s on TV, the music I listen to. I photograph it all, and bring the images into the studio. There I look at them, ponder them , worry about them and remember them. I draw and recombine them in multiple ways, coalescing into pieces that often surprise me as reflections of an over-active dream life. I often choose to work on ephemeral, translucent surfaces – strong but new polypropylenes and drafting papers. I never know how these surfaces will receive my materials. Sometimes they are resistant, sometimes accepting. I never know if they will soon fade away and disappear, or if they will last forever. This uncertainty in my work feels completely appropriate now. I’m still in love with color, and continue to seek out and invent new ways to use it, play with it, and learn about it. These days I don’t go out much, I don’t travel, my primary escape is the corner store or riding the subway. But life is rich no matter how small one’s radius, and rife with material for making art.
